June 14th is annually celebrated as Flag Day which commemorates the adoption of the United States flag. This is significant to senior citizens, most especially to veterans since it is also considered the birthday of the United States Army. The sense of patriotism is strong among senior citizens and they enjoy commemorating events that have shaped our great country.
Unlike most holidays, Flag Day can be a laid-back day without much fuss. Caring Nurses Services suggests celebrating this holiday with our beloved senior citizens in a relaxed yet meaningful way. We’ve gathered a few Flag Day activities that seniors can enjoy indoor or outdoor during this holiday:
1. Raise your own flag outdoors or watch a flag raising ceremony nearby. What better way to commemorate this day than to honor the American flag.
2. Try reciting the Pledge of Allegiance with the seniors. If grandchildren are present, have them recite along.
3. Watch a historical document about this significant event with the whole family while enjoying some popcorn and other snacks.
4. Have a craft day when they can make flag-themed accessories, mosaic flag art, red-blue-white tie-dye shirts, etc. This can be a fun activity with children and grandchildren.
5. Bake patriotic-themed goodies such as American Pie, flag-shaped and decorated cakes and cookies. Have a bake sale in your own yard.
6. Enjoy a sunny day out flying kites and having a picnic with the entire family.
7. Watch local shows, if there are any, to celebrate the day.
8. Visit the local cemetery and place flags on the grave sites of veteran friends and family.
9. Have a get-together with fellow veterans if there are a few in your neighborhood.
10. Have a story-telling session with kids in the neighborhood and grandchildren about how it was before and how Flag Day came about. This is both fun and educational for the children.
More than being a national celebration, Flag Day is a good day to get together with family and friends and just have a relaxing day together. Caring Nurses Services, a Home Care Agency in Edgewood MD, encourages celebrating this with senior citizens to give them a sense of significance. This historical event is of great significance and senior citizens have the highest regard for history.
